Hooks Defeat Cubs Behind Strong Performance From Bermudez

Jonathan Bermudez was dominant on the bump, as the starter rang up 11 strikeouts in Hooks's 13-3 victory over Cubs on Sunday at Valley Ridge Park. Jonathan Bermudez surrendered two hits and one run over four innings while walking none.

Hooks got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Jonathan Bermudez doubled down the left field line, and Michael Landeck lined out, each scoring one run.

Hooks scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Luis Sotomayor singled, scoring one run, Nic Nelson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Jonathan Bermudez singled, scoring one run, and Steven Mock singled, scoring two runs.

Hooks added three runs in the third after Luis Sotomayor singled to center field on a 3-0 count.

Garrett Puyear took the loss for Cubs. The pitcher went five and two-thirds innings, allowing 13 runs on 16 hits, striking out five and walking five. Brayden Berry appeared in relief for Hooks.

Hooks piled up 16 hits in the game. Luis Sotomayor went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Hooks in hits. Jaxson Berry and Gabe Baker each collected multiple hits for Hooks. Jaxson Berry, Gabe Baker, and Daniel Zamora each stole multiple bases for Hooks. Hooks ran wild on the base paths, tallying seven stolen bases for the game.

Austin Arey provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Cubs with two runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Austin Arey, C Boring, and Jake Fleckenstein each collected one hit for Cubs. Cubs turned one double play in the game. Cubs were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Cameron Whitehead had the most chances in the field with six.
